A new Gas Compressor Station to be built in Greater Poland
GAZ-SYSTEM has signed a contract for the construction of a new Gas Compressor Station in Lwówek and related transmission infrastructure. Construction work is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026 and is expected to be completed at the turn of 2027/2028. The contract was awarded to Budimex.
The new Gas Compressor Station will be built in the vicinity of the gas node in Lwówek. The facility will be equipped with three compressor units with a total capacity of 24 MW. The existing gas node in Lwówek will also be expanded as part of the investment project. It is intended to be combined with the new compressor station and increase the efficient use of the national transmission system capacity and of the transit gas pipeline system. The maximum value of the signed construction contract amounts to approximately PLN 481 million, including possible indexation.- Gas Compressor Station in Lwówek is crucial for increasing the transmission flexibility from entry points (LNG Terminal, Baltic Pipe gas pipeline) located in northern Poland to the nationwide transmission system. This project is also intended to enhance technical cooperation between the national transmission system and the transit gas pipeline system, thus to improve the security and reliability of supplies, especially during periods of peak demand for natural gas in Poland. Construction of the compressor station in Lwówek, alongside the FSRU program, is another component in the process of transmission infrastructure development to provide technical capabilities for a regional gas trading and transmission hub in Poland - explains Elżbieta Kramek, Vice President of GAZ-SYSTEM Management Board.
The location of the Compressor Station facility in the vicinity of Lwówek is crucial for the functioning of the national transmission system. It is at this point that the strategic gas pipelines converge, including the Goleniów-Lwówek gas pipeline which supplies gas from the LNG Terminal in Świnoujście, and offshore Baltic Pipe, as well as the transmission pipeline Lwówek-Odolanów. Both gas pipelines are part of the North-South Gas Corridor which is pivotal for ensuring robust gaseous fuel supply and further diversification of gas sources for Poland and the region. The construction of the new compressor station will increase the capacity of this transmission route of over 800 km, connecting the northern entry points to the system with points on the western and south-eastern state borders and with domestic gas storage facilities.
The project is implemented as part of GAZ-SYSTEM's long-term strategy aiming at developing a modern, resilient, and flexible transmission infrastructure. These ventures are intended not only to increase Poland's energy security but also to provide adequate technical conditions for the efficient functioning of the gas market in Central and Eastern Europe in a dynamically changing energy sector environment.
Value of project co-financing
The investment project is co-financed under the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment 2021-2027 (FEnIKS) program.
The total cost of the project: “Construction of the Gas Compressor Station in Lwówek” included in the co-financing agreement amounts to over PLN 892 million, while the contribution from European Funds is over PLN 559 million.
Detailed information on the planned investment projects is available on GAZ-SYSTEM website.
