NATURAL GAS FOR POMERANIA 2015 - strategic investments increasing the energy security in the Pomeranian Voivodship
The construction of the Underground Gas Storeroom in Kosaków as well as new gas transmission and distribution pipelines comprise strategic investments that are being fulfilled by Polish gas companies in the Pomeranian region. These investments will significantly increase the energy security of the entire region and will also enable the amount of customers to increase. The development of the gas infrastructure in Pomerania is a key element of the investment programme of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. and the Polish Oil and Gas Company as well as the companies belonging to GK PGNiG: Pomorska Spółka Gazownictwa sp. z o.o. and Investgas S.A.
"The rise in energy consumption which is going hand in hand with the development of the region places new challenges before us. Nowadays, a lot of space is being devoted to the problem of energy security in the public debate. One of the guarantees of the Voivodship's development and the fulfilment of the customer demand is uninterrupted access to energy raw materials as well as a dense and reliable transmission network. I look towards the investments being currently fulfilled as well as those planned in the future with great optimism as they will enable all interested parties access to the gas infrastructure in the years to come," Roman Zaborowski, Pomeranian Voivode commented.
"The self-government of the Pomeranian Voivodship has for many years lent its support to the ventures of Polish gas sector companies intending to develop Pomareanian energy and increase the national and regional energy security," Mieczysław Struk, Governor of the Pomeranian Voivodship, asserted. "In supporting ventures connected with the construction of new gas facilities and infrastructure I have watched with great satisfaction and recognition the cooperation of the following companies: GAZ-SYSTEM S.A., the Pomorska Spółka Gazownictwa sp. z o.o., PGNiG S.A. as well as Investgas S.A. in the performance of strategic investments leading to the increase of the security of gas supplies in the Pomeranian region. I'm convinced that the investments connected with the development of the gas transmission network and storage will contribute to raising the competitiveness of the Pomeranian economy and may also constitute the future foundation for possible new investments in Pomerania that would be connected with prospecting for and exploitation of unconventional gas deposits, including shale gas," Governor Mieczysław Struk added.
The Polish Oil and Gas Company S.A. is the leader on the Polish gas market
and the largest prospecting and extraction company in Poland. PGNiG S.A. is conducting prospecting activity for unconventional gas in the Pomeranian region. In March 2011, the Lubocino-1 borehole drilling in the vicinity of Wejherowo came to completion. The borehole was found to have a promising gas flow and surveillance of the conducted works is currently in progress.
However, the Company’s greatest investment in the Pomeranian Voivodship is the Kosakowo Cavern Underground Gas Storeroom, whose first capacities will be commissioned as soon as in 2014. This will further secure the national gas system enabling uninterrupted gas supplies during peak demand for the fuel in the Autumn/Winter season. The value of the GK PGNiG investment in Pomerania will amount to approx. 1 bn PLN in the next few years.
PGNiG S.A. supplies natural gas among others to Customers in Pomerania through the Pomeranian Division of Gas Turnover in Gdansk, which sells the raw material both to individual as well as industrial customers and actively supports the trade.
"Pomerania has a very important place on the investment map of PGNiG S.A. I'm convinced that the projects which we're leading are very beneficial to the inhabitants of the Pomeranian Voivodship and highly significant for PGNiG S.A. This is why we value the favourable atmosphere for conducting investments in this region which has been created by the Pomeranian Voivode and the Pomeranian Voivodship Governor. From the point of view of energy security the construction of the Cavern Underground Gas Storeroom in Kosakowo is of great importance and will become part of the Pomeranian gas infrastructure. Shale gas also poses a great challenge and constitutes a fantastic opportunity for Poland whose significant stores - as forecast - could be located in the very region of Pomerania,” Sławomir Hinc, Vice President of the Management Board of PGNiG S.A for Financial Affairs explained.
GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. is responsible for the construction of new gas transmission pipelines for the transport of natural gas in Pomerania. The construction of the Włocławek-Gdynia and Szczecin-Gdańsk pipelines (the Słupsk-Wiczlino section in the Pomeranian Voivodship) will enable the transmission of increased volumes of gas and will impact the development of entities whose operations depend on the use of natural gas. The investment will also have an effect on the unification of technical specifications of the transmission network from the Gustorzyn hub to the Gdańsk region as well as the planned Kosakowo Underground Gas Storeroom.
"The fulfilment by GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. of strategic projects in Pomerania is one of the key elements that we have undertaken in buidling the transmission network in Poland. The investments that are being carried out in this part of the country will facilitate increasing the energy security of this region of northern Poland and will enable the gasification of new areas. I'm fully convinced that the construction of new gas transmission pipelines in the Voivodship will guarantee the economic recovery of Pomerania and facilitate its further development,” Sławomir Śliwiński, Member of the Management Board of GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. asserted.
Key investments conducted by the Pomorska Spółka Gazownictwa sp. z o.o.
in the Pomeranian Voivodship include the North-Eastern project supplying the City of Gdańsk along with the gasification of Wiślinka and the Sobieszewo Island. The purpose of the initiative, which is being carried out is to improve the security of gas supplies in the entire Tri-City agglomeration as well as the gasification of new areas in the communes of: Pruszcz Gdański, Suchy Dąb, Pszczółki, Cedry Wielkie, and Sobieszewo Island.
"The development of the network of the local distributor complements the development of the domestic system which is why, in unison with the gas transmission system operator, we are systematically increasing the technical possibilities of gas transport for customers in Pomerania,” Adam Kielak, President of the Management Board of the Pomorska Spółka Gazownictwa commented.
The operations fulfilled in Pomerania by Investgas S.A. concentrate above all on
the construction of the underground section of the Kosakowo Underground Gas Storeroom, of which it is the general contractor. The location of the storeroom beside the Bay of Puck will be of great significance for the continuity of gas supplies in the Pomeranian Voivodship.
PGNiG S.A. is also performing an investment project in Pomerania in the scope of the gas storeroom - the "Kosakowo" Underground Gas Storeroom - with a planned capacity of approx. 250 bn m3. The general contractor of the investment is the INVESTGAS S.A. Company specialising in the construction and management of underground gas storerooms in rock salt deposits. The task of the "Kosakowo" UGS will be to improve the gas transmission conditions in Pomerania, particularly ensuring continuity of supplies and increasing the connection possibilities of new customers to the system. INVESTGAS performs all its investments with the utmost care and attention to protection of the natural environment.
"The "Kosakowo" UGS situated in the vicinity of a scenic park and close to protection zones is an example of the eco-friendly designs of facilities impacting the natural environment, referred to as eco-designs. We implement innovative technical solutions in the construction process that minimise or even eliminate the negative impact on the environment and we also conduct permanent surveillance of the investment area as well as its impact on the ecosystem of the Bay of Puck,” Teresa Laskowska, President of the Management Board of INVESTGAS S.A. commented.
