The National Gas Dispatch Centre is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year.  The service is here 24/7 making decisions that ensure safe and stable operation of Poland’s national gas transmission system.

- It is a unique anniversary, as it celebrates the very heart of Poland’s gas transmission system. This is a place of crucial importance for managing the security and stability of the system that every single day ensures the continuity of supply to the entire economy – emphasised Sławomir Hinc, President of GAZ- SYSTEM.

Anniversary dedicated to energy security
To celebrate the 55th anniversary of the National Gas Dispatch Centre, GAZ-SYSTEM organised a gala event including a panel discussion devoted to ‘The evolution of gas transmission system management in Poland’. The debate included topics such as the process of assuming operator’s role, the significance of the first gas transmission tariff, the development of the gas market in Poland, and changes affecting the country’s energy security.

The event was attended by representatives of public administration, the academic community, business partners and the media.  Among the guests was Wojciech Wrochna, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Energy and Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure.

Former and current employees of the National Gas Dispatch Centre took centre stage during the ceremony, with their contributions to the development of operational capabilities and the building of the Centre’s organisational culture being recognised with anniversary awards.

From central control to the Operator
The history of the National Gas Dispatch Centre began in 1971, when the development of the national network and the growing importance of natural gas for the industry necessitated the establishment of a single centre to coordinate the operation of the transmission system. Initially, the Centre was primarily responsible for managing gas flow through the network, balancing the system, and coordinating the operation of the infrastructure components in periods of peak demand.

The establishment of GAZ-SYSTEM in 2004 and the process of assuming the operator’s responsibilities, associated with the liberalisation of the gas market and the implementation of EU regulations, constituted the turning point. The formation of an independent gas transmission system operator, an organisation responsible for the security of system operation, balancing, capacity management and cooperation with the European gas market, marked the beginning of a new operational culture.

A modern system in the energy transition
Over the following decades, the organisation has undergone a profound technological and organisational transformation. Today, the National Gas Dispatch Centre operates in a highly automated environment, utilising modern telemetry systems, advanced data analytics and solutions supporting real-time system management.

At the same time, the conditions for the operation of the entire system are changing. The dynamic growth of renewable energy sources, the increasing role of the gas sector, and preparations for biomethane transmission mean that the national transmission infrastructure is operating in an increasingly integrated and flexible energy market. In these circumstances, the Centre remains pivotal to the national transmission system, combining many years of experience with modern technological solutions in the increasingly demanding environment of the transitioning energy market.
