EU financial support for the Baltic Pipe project under the CEF Energy 2017

Within the CEF Energy Call for Proposals announced in 2017 by the European Commission, support was granted for the PCI 8.3 Poland–Denmark interconnection [currently known as “Baltic Pipe”], action titled: Preparatory works for the Baltic Pipe Project up to obtainment of all necessary permission(s) in Poland and in Denmark”. The Action will be developed by the Polish and Danish transmission system operators, i.e.: GAZ-SYSTEM S.A and Energinet.
The maximum EU financial assistance for the proposed Action amounts to EUR 33.1 million.
The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a key EU funding instrument to promote growth, jobs and competitiveness through targeted infrastructure investment at European level. It supports the development of high performing, sustainable and efficiently interconnected trans-European networks in the fields of transport, energy and digital services.
Earlier, in 2015, the Baltic Pipe project was granted financial support under the CEF Programme for the analytical works and development of feasibility study.
The main objectives of the Baltic Pipe Project include further strengthening of supply diversification, market integration, price convergence and security of supply primarily in Poland and Denmark and secondly in Sweden, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Baltic region.
In November 2017, the Baltic Pipe Project was recognized by the European Commission as a ‘Project of Common Interest’ (PCI), a status granted to projects aimed at strengthening the European internal energy market by reaching the EU’s energy policy objectives of affordable, secure and sustainable energy. This status was granted for the third time, earlier the project was included on the first and second PCI list adopted respectively in 2013 and 2015.
The PCI status together with the grantunder the CEF programme demonstrates the significance and regional importance of the Baltic Pipe Project as well as confirms the necessity of its implementation.
