Damasławek Cavern Underground Gas Storeroom – completion of drilling work

Photo of the article - We have completed an important stage of our works. Initial positive results get us closer to making of the final investment decision on the construction of the storage facility planned at the end of 2019 - said Aleksander Zawisza, Deputy Manager of the Gas Market Development Division at GAZ-SYSTEM, during the meeting that took place on 29 August 2018 in Świątkowo, in the commune of Janowiec Wielkopolski. It was an occasion to thank to the local community and the representatives of the authorities and institutions for their co-operation and participation in the stage of the project completed so far.

What was the course of the test boreholes drilling?

The planned location of the Cavern Underground Gas Storeroom is Damasławek salt dome in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, at the border between the communes of Janowiec Wielkopolski and Żnin.

The survey consisted in drilling of two test boreholes - the first reached the depth of 1,979 metres, and the second - 1,625 metres. Cores were taken from both boreholes, which now are measured and analysed in order to learn the geological structure of the location, as well as the chemical and physical properties of salt, an local hydrogeological conditions. The initial results show that both boreholes are suitable for building of the underground gas storage facility. The salt cores taken from boreholes with be subjected to further tests. Mechanical, leaching and chemical tests will be carried out on selected cores to provide to the company necessary information of key importance to the success of the project.

After the end of the works, the test boreholes were carefully secured, the drilling yards were liquidated, and their area was reclaimed.

To the benefit to local communities

The priority of GAZ-SYSTEM is carrying out of the investments respecting the natural environment and according to the safety requirements.  The company tries to minimise the impact of the investment on the quality of life of the residents, and takes into consideration the needs and expectations of local communities within the confines of the social dialogue.

The communes, on the territory of which the investment is going to be located, will obtain financial revenues, i.e. on concession fees and charges for mining of salt and for storage. Another important advantage for the local communities will be the creation of several tens of jobs.

Storage facilities play an important role in the natural gas transmission system – they influence the reliability and continuity of supplies. The construction of the storage facility in Damasławek will also contribute to the optimized use of the gas infrastructure owned by GAZ-SYSTEM. Broadening of the portfolio of performed services combined with linking of the areas of transfer, re-gasification and storage will enable the introduction of a comprehensive service – a solution advantageous to the gas market players.
