Building Permit for Gas Pipeline to Żerań CHP Plant

Photo of the article On 19 September 2016, the Voivode of the Mazowieckie Voivodship issued a building permit for a high-pressure gas pipeline between Żerań CHP Plant and Rembelszczyzna Compressor Station. This project will ensure natural gas transmission to the newly erected combined gas and steam unit, which is to replace the existing coal-fired boilers and will significantly reduce pollution emissions. This will contribute to increased energy security for Warsaw, and improved air quality for its residents.
A 10-kilometre section of the pipeline with a diameter of 500 mm will pass through the grounds of two municipalities: Nieporęt and Białołęka. Its route will run from Rembelszczyzna Compressor Station across Białołęka along the Żerań Canal to Żerań CHP Plant. Laid ca. 1.5 m underground, the pipeline will bypass residential areas and will not conflict with the existing development. The system construction is to commence in 2017 and continue for around two years. The project will be phased into sections to minimise inconvenience for the community.
Not only has the gas pipeline been designed in such a way as not to conflict with residential estates, but also to have as little impact on the environment as possible. In view of the required tree removal, GAZ-SYSTEM will plant 5,000 replacement trees of certain species (lime, sycamore, oak and the biocoenotic species of wild pear, wild apple and hawthorn) in the Białołęka District. Further, to compensate for the cut down bushes, an area of 2.2 ha will be planted with trees within the grounds of Jabłonna Forest Division.
Upon completion of the pipeline construction, the grounds by the Żerań Canal will be reclaimed to their pre-construction condition. “We welcome interaction with the residents and local government as to the final shape of the revitalisation concept. We are planning to hold consultations on this matter shortly,” says Monika Bończa-Tomaszewska, Corporate Communications Office Director, GAZ-SYSTEM.
The combined heat and power unit at Żerań CHP Plant, which is owned by PGNiG TERMIKA, will be commissioned in 2019. The unit will annually consume ca. 0.6 bcm of natural gas supplied by the pipeline from Rembelszczyzna Compressor Station. With such quantity, it will be possible to generate 3 m MWh of electric power, which will be enough to cater for the needs of 650,000 dwelling units. The construction of this new unit will help reduce the emissions of dust by half, sulphur dioxide by 60% and nitric oxides by 30%. For those residing in the neighbourhood, converting the heat and power station to gas will also mean less inconvenience getting around on transport; the number of carriages with coal is expected to decrease by ca. 17,000 and that of lorries by 4,500 annually.

Between 2012 and 2016, GAZ-SYSTEM planted 1,055,000 trees as part of its projects across Poland. This demonstrates not only the massive scale of the projects carried out by the Company in the recent years (1,200 km of new pipelines) but also its commitment to nature and environmental protection.
The Company also engages its employees in activities supporting environmental compensation. In 2016 alone, 375 GAZ-SYSTEM volunteers took part in forest planting initiatives rolled out in cooperation with six Forest Divisions from all over Poland. In total, the Company’s employees planted nearly 30,000 pine, beech and oak tree cuttings.
